The inimitable Michelle Obama once said, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” And no matter what those accomplishments are, they deserve to be celebrated. Whether it’s a hotel in New York City that memorializes a Jazz Age legend or one in Milwaukee that honors the patron saint of artists, they all have something in common—they salute women who have made their mark in one way or another. Be sure to consider these properties if you’re looking for a stay that honors amazing women, both famous and lesser-known.

Hotel Zena: Washington, DC

Opened in 2019, just months after the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote, Hotel Zena is an impressive tribute to women’s empowerment in both its concept and its art. Upon arrival you’ll notice the building’s seven-story tall murals which depict powerful female warriors. Located in DC’s Logan Circle, the hotel pays tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a unique mural. The lobby’s portrait gallery features the stories of ten powerful women who have made significant contributions in the struggle for gender equality. Don’t miss a delectable meal at Figleaf, the onsite bar and restaurant that serves locally-sourced plates.

The Eliza Jane: New Orleans, LA

Just like New Orleans itself, this hotel holds many stories. Named after Eliza Jane Nicholson, a poet-turned-heiress, this stylish hotel honors the woman who eventually went on to become the country’s first female newspaper publisher. Thanks to her deft guidance, the Daily Picayune transformed from a local penny paper to a national institution, and the newspaper’s offices were once housed where the hotels stands today. Visit the Press Room, the hotel’s bar and lounge, and enjoy a cocktail while perusing the antique typewriters and library of books. Located just two blocks from the French Quarter, you’ll have no trouble with letting the good times roll.

Hotel Emma: San Antonio, TX

Located on San Antonio’s riverfront, Hotel Emma is a masterful blend of historical elements with its exposed brick and factory features. Once a 19th-century brewhouse, this hotel was named after Emma Koehler, who ran the brewery after her husband died in 1914. She kept it thriving during Prohibition by converting her operations to drycleaning, and making ice cream and soda. Choose between the luxurious rooms in the Brewhouse Tower and the River Cellars, or treat yourself to a stay in the Emma Koehler Suite, which is their version of the Presidential Suite complete with a fireplace, grand piano, and a dining table for eight.

Hotel Figueroa: Los Angeles, CA

The Hotel Figueroa was opened in 1926 by the YWCA, and was intended as a place for solo women travelers who were prohibited from staying at most hotels without a male chaperone. Over the years it has become a hub of social activism, hosting political rallies and press conferences, and was even a designated polling place during last year’s election. As you walk through the colorful lobby, admire the original artwork by women honoring the hotel’s roots. The Moroccan tiles and garden pathway that leads to an inviting pool make you feel like you’re in Marrakesh, not downtown Los Angeles. The hotel was renovated in 2018 and now basks in its original Spanish Colonial grandeur.

The Evelyn Hotel: New York City, NY

This art deco-inspired boutique hotel in New York City’s trendy NoMad neighborhood is a tribute to “It Girl” Evelyn Nesbit and the Jazz Age. With thoughtful musical touches such as a trombone brass chandelier, accordion sconces, and a digital gramophone, staying here is a nostalgic experience. Nesbit—who was a model, chorus girl, and actress—was also at the center of what was then called the “trial of the century.” Situated in Tin Pan Alley, which was once the epicenter of the American music industry, each of the hotel’s 159 rooms offer a combination of glamour and sophistication. Lounge on one of the lobby’s velvet couches and enjoy a cocktail while observing the scene.

Hotel Effie opened its doors on February 1 on the Panhandle near Destin. The four-star hotel was named after Effie Burns, the owner’s grandmother. And nothing conjures up Southern hospitality more than this woman, who was known for her charm and described as the ultimate hostess. When you’re not playing golf or tennis at the nearby Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort (which guests have full access to), refresh yourself at the rooftop pool and enjoy views of the bay. A stay here is just like spending time with Effie herself—complete with a glass of sweet tea. Be sure to dine at Ovide, the culinary offering by celebrity chef Hugh Acheson.

Named for Houston’s unsung hero Charlotte Baldwin Allen, the C. Baldwin Hotel is a delightful combination of retro and modern. Often referred to as the “Mother of Houston,” Allen used her inheritance to finance the city’s development. In addition to being a business trailblazer, she was also a cattle rancher and a philanthropist. While you’re there, visit Rosalie Italian Soul, the on-site restaurant which was also named after another groundbreaking woman, and enjoy a meal of Blue Crab Manicotti. Even the meeting rooms showcase the lives of prominent Texas women, including Senator Barbara Jordan and music legend Janis Joplin.

With its focus on the arts, Saint Kate encourages guets to express themselves from the moment they walk through the door. Located in Milwaukee’s theater and entertainment district, the hotel’s namesake is Saint Catherine of Bologna, the patron saint of artists, and there’s something about being at this 219-room hotel that evokes the creative muse. Its first and second floors serve as an art museum and its motto, to “invite participation and expect change,” is further carried out with a 95-seat black box theater, and several gallery and exhibition spaces.
